Well, it has been a productive year for us. We moved to Kelowna from North Vancouver, got married, went to France and Ireland for our honeymoon, then moved into our dream home the day we returned. It has been a non-stop, whirlwind adventure! However, I don’t think either of us had a clue how much work goes into a house (even though friends and family tried to prepare us).
We’ve named our home, Ohana House, a Hawaiian term that we hold dear to our hearts which means family, but in the extended sense of the word. Right from he get-go, we started working on upgrading the house. So far, we’ve added in a proper closet system into our walk-in, added a hot tub to our backyard (digging into and levelling out clay in the process), and have almost completed a full kitchen renovation that included tasks well beyond our skill sets. All while hosting 14 sets of guests in 10 months. Results have far surpassed expectations, and are so proud of our work.
How did we manage it? With a ‘can do’ attitude, and some guidance from the DIYers of the internet. YouTube videos and Pinterest blogs provided us with the basic steps, then trial and error and perseverance got us to where we are today. We still have a lot of work to do on our house, not to mention a whole lot of learning along the way, but we are excited about the challenge.
The internet is a powerful tool that gives us the power of having instant information at our fingertips, and keeps us close with family and friends around the world. We’ve made the exciting decision to begin documenting and sharing our experiences and adventures online to help us stay in touch with our Ohana and to give back to the DIY community that has taught us so much. A project isn’t the same without a name, so we decided on Konkin Can Do. We know this is yet another challenging project to take on, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. We hope you can join & enjoy!
Lots of Love,
Ben & Julia Konkin
